14 III: Maria Nowak, Kontantinos Balamoshev & Marzena Wojtczak (UW), Law in Social Networks of late antique Aphrodite – preliminary results and a case study
Papyri from Aphrodite are a treasure trove for anyone interested in legal history because they offer examples of almost every legal tool used in Late Antiquity and some that are otherwise unattested. They allow one to see how Roman law operated on the ground and verify whether the ‘law of books’ really translated into everyday practices of provincial scribes and officials. In this talk, we will present some of the developments of our work on the project Law in Social Networks in Late Antique Aphrodite. We will first discuss the practical results of the first stage of the project, including studies on the structure of the documents and textual corrections. Then we will turn to a case study focused on the registration of documents in sixth-century Egypt.
